Wolves Season ends in Upset at hands of Lake Catholic

October 25, 2011

The West Geauga boys soccer team season ended during its sectional semi-final match 2-1 at the hands of Lake Catholic. After falling behind early, the wolves switched things up entering the 2nd half attacking the Lake defesne for 40 minutes. Josh Ebersbacher pulled a goal back early for the team to put the pressure on the Lake Catholic defense. Despite creating a number of quality scoring chances, the Wolves could not pick the lock and Lake Catholic was able to hold on for the win.

The team will be meeting this Thursday 10/27 after school to meet to discuss the season and return jerseys.

Wolves Leave it Late at Perry

October 12, 2011

The West G boys soccer team, unbeaten in 3 of their last 4, left it late on the road at Perry before pulling out the win. The Wolves fell behind early despite controlling the majority of possession and creating a number of chances. Ben Lawrence was credited with the opening goal when he found himself on the end of a pass from Owen Hester. Hester played Lawrence in behind the Perry defense. Lawrence pressured the GK who spilled the ball into his own net to tie the game at 1-1.

The Wolves created more quality chances in the 2nd half, but could not find breakthrough until with one minute remaining in the contest. Anton Medancic found himself wide on the touchline with time and space. Medanci delivered a teasing ball for the defense to deal with. The Perry defense’s attempt at a clearance would land at the feet of Abe Akucewich. Akucewich skillfully half-volleyed a well placed shot which kissed off the post and into the top corner to seal the win for the Wolves.

West Geauga is in action at home on Thursday vs. Wickliffe in their CVC finale. The Athletic Department will be honoring the hard work and dedication of seven seniors on Thursday at 7pm.

Final Stretch

September 28, 2011

The team enters the final stretch of the year with a 4 game skid, including 2 CVC matches. The Wolverines will face Beechwood, Wickliffe, Lake Catholic, and finish out the regular season away at Perry. The all-important District Seed meeting will take place on October 9th. Three matches fall before the meeting, meaning the Wolves still have time to improve on their seeding and regular season record of 3-9 prior to their selection. The Wolverines are currently ranked 10th in the Greater Cleveland voting.

Momentum going into the post season is all important as we have seen in years past. Recovering from injuries, improving on fitness, regaining sharpness, resetting the mental threshold, and being well drilled on set pieces and transitions are what wins games at this point in the year. Go West G!

Wolves drop two

September 7, 2011

The WG Wolverine boys soccer team, facing one of the area’s toughest schedules, dropped a pair of games over the holiday weekend.  On a humid Saturday afternoon, the Wolverines welcomed perennial state power house Elyria Catholic.  Elyria Catholic, which held a 17-3 record in 2010 on route to finishing as a Regional Finalist last year, returned several key players from an experienced squad.  Elyria Catholic won this year’s contest by a score of 5-0.

West Geauga started its road campaign at Orange High School on Tuesday, Aug 6th.  Liam Cogan got the Wolves off to a lead early in the first half off a nicely finished move that was setup by Abe Akuecwich.  It was Cogan’s team leading 3rd goal of the 2011 campaign and Akuecwich’s team leading 3rd assist.  The Wolves defended stoutly until midway through the 2nd half when Orange’s pressure finally broke the dam.  Both sides exchanged scoring opportunities with Tyler Dupree narrowly missing to give West Geauga the lead.  The referee awarded Orange with a penalty kick that was missed with less than 10 minutes to go.  The pressure finally gave when Orange converted a rebound of a nicely saved freekick that Joe Petti made two exceptional reaction saves, on but the defense could not mop up the 2nd follow up.

West Geauga is back in action tomorrow, Thursday Aug 8th at Geneva’s new sports complex.

Wolves lose battle to Chagrin Falls

September 1, 2011

http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2011/08/31/sports/doc4e5dc32a685c2319396406.txt

The West Wolverines began CVC with a game of 2 halves display in a very ugly, combative, and direct match which pitted the neighboring rivals vs. one another. The Wolves started out very cagey, feeling out how the tigers would play in the 1st half. In an overall quiet 1st half that Chagrin had the better of, Chagrin eventually took the lead 15minutes in off a set piece that was headed in.

WG responded in the second half and started to gain a grip of the game when a Tyler Dupree long throw in reached Liam Cogan who connected to the tie the match at 1-1.

The game would continue to be a set-piece battle until with 11 minutes to go, Chagrin Falls connected again to take the lead off a scramble on top of the Wolves 18 yard box.

West Geauga will look to rebound this weekend, when they welcome Elyria Catholic to finish out their opening 4 game homestead.

Wolves Rebound vs. Fairview.. CVC play commences!

August 30, 2011

The West Geauga Wolverines did not have much time to think about their opening night loss with a game vs. Fairivew coming two days later on Wednesday. The West Geauga Wolverines responded to the challenge and came away with a 4-2 win. Goals were scored by Cogan, Lawrence, and Akucewich knocked in 2 goals in the second half to complete the scoring. Anton Medanic contributed a strong defensive effort from the midfield and was solid throughout earning Coach Murphy’s 1st hardest working player award on the season. Aaron Rabe, Tyler Dupree, Liam Cogan, and Abe Akucewich also contributed assists on the night.

West Geauga soccer takes to the field again on Tuesday (tomorrow, 8/30) vs. CVC foe Chagrin Falls. The kickoff is slated for a 5 & 7pm kickoff at Howell Field.

Opening Night Setback

August 23, 2011

The WG high school team had an error filled night and was on the brunt of a tough loss to the start the 2011 campaign. Some individual and collective mistakes sealed the Wolverines fate early in the 2nd half falling to Normandy by the final score of 5-0.

This result was especially surprising after the strong preseason the team had playing several Division I schools tough including Mentor and Western Reserve Academy. The boys need to readjust to the high school field size, and its conditions. The team will look to rebound on Wednesday at 5 & 7pm vs. a physical Fairview side.

Season starts tonight!

August 22, 2011

The West Geauga boys soccer teams will begin their quest for team glory as they play host to Normandy tonight at Howell field in the season and home opener. Junior Varsity will kick off at 5pm with Varsity following at 7pm.
